Why Is Buying Sex Toys So Confusing?
Ever try to buy a sex toy?
Very confusing.
Why?
The math.
There are thousands a different sex toys made by dozens of manufacturers selling in hundreds of online sex toy stores. And each toy is marketed as the path to unbridled ecstasy. How do you separate the infomercial from the information?
Not well.
There are three main sources of information about sex toys, all of them with severe limitations.
First up are the manufacturers and retailers selling the sex toys. They give you a fair amount of information but they are trying to move product not necessarily match you up with the one that is best for you.
Here is where hyperbole and hearsay beat facts and features into the ground. While it is useful to get manufacturer specs like dimensions and materials that make up the sex toy, almost everything else in the marketing copy is designed to sell, not necessarily impart good information.
The second source of information about sex toys are expert critics. These are typically knowledgeable sex bloggers who review sex toys. Many if not most of them have affiliate agreements with the manufacturers or the retailers. Meaning, they make money off sales that come from their published reviews.
That there is a conflict of interest. Especially if that blogger receives a complimentary sex toy. If a manufacturer or retailer gives you a $200 product to review at no charge, there will be pressure on you to deliver a good review or they will stop sending you free products.
We are not casting aspersions on everybody who reviews sex toys, just pointing out the obvious conflict of interest that they make money off the products they review. If they give the product a bad review not only will they piss off the manufacturer and the retailer, ending their free product freebies, they won’t make any money off their publish review.
Think about it. You’ve spent 5-8 hours of your time researching, testing and publishing a review that you’re not going to make money off of because you said the product sucked? Who in their right mind would continue doing something that would severely crimp their ability to make money?
That is why you rarely see negative sex toy product reviews. We’ve gone through at least a hundred sex blogs–really any blog that has sex toy reviews and rarely, and we mean RARELY, do we find negative reviews.
That doesn’t mean that these professional critic reviews aren’t worth reading. Many are. but there are other limitations to this source of sex toy information.
Expert reviews are premised on the idea that your body is built like the reviewer’s. But our genitals and orifices come in all sizes, shapes and locations (your clitoris or prostate gland might be bigger/smaller and positioned differently than the reviewer’s). That’s why it’s possible to buy an unsatisfactory toy from a respected expected reviewer.
Second, most reviewers do not compare competitive products in a head-to-head match, not in any useful, meaningful way.
Third, there are way too many products for any one reviewer to test. So they can only test the products that they are interested in, which you or may or may not care about.
The result of all these limitations from different sources of information? Analysis paralysis brought on by too many product choices, conflicts of interest, hyperbole and information overload.
That is why we are so proud of our system– it’s simply neutralizes all the limitations of other information sources. That’s because we don’t review products and therefore have no conflict of interest because. It simply doesn’t matter to us which product you buy.
We do have affiliate agreements with retailers ( we make a small commission on items you buy from clicking the links in this site) but we are not pushing any one product over the other. you don’t ever have to worry that our recommendation engine is only recommending a product because we have a stake in its sale.
We literally don’t give a Flying Fig which product you buy. What we care about is ensuring that you have the right information to make the right decision for you.
How do we do all this? Easy. Like the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, we aggregate critic and user reviews into meaningful, understandable scores that help you make the right purchase decisions.
The beauty of the system is that it doesn’t try to sell you on anything. It’s a way of divining the wisdom of the crowds. When you see our score for prostate massager our personal opinion has nothing to do with it. It just means that we have tallied up the number reviews for that product from many many different sources and developed a ranking for it .
We are proud to introduce you to a new way of buying sex toys. Be sure to take our innovative prostate massager quiz:
