The Missing Piece… of Ass.
By Colby Alexander
I’m a multiracial American and I’m very proud of my heritage, black and white. I am extremely happy to say “my mom is this and my father is that.” And I’ll correct anyone who tries to force me to choose one over the other. Having said that, it does not stop others from placing me in a category that makes them more comfortable, and usually that category is “black.” I don’t really mind–it would be too exhausting to correct so many people. My mom always said, “Be wise when picking your battles.” And being part black and being categorized as African American is nothing new: Barack Obama, Shamar Moore, Boris Kodjoe, Tiger Woods, to name a few.
I grew up in an interracial household so “dating outside your race” is completely normal to me, I don’t think twice about it. If you’re attractive to me then you’re attractive to me. End of story.
Like most guys, I want to be able to enjoy porn without worrying about the burdens of social injustice and political chaos. But it seems hard to do.
I don’t know about you (I literally don’t know you), but I enjoy porn. I look at it if I’m alone and bored, if I need to release sexual tension, and if I’m just too damn tired or lazy to go through the hassle of trying to impress someone enough that they’d lend (A) their hand (B) their mouth (C) their penis, or hopefully (D) all of the above.
So, when I look at porn, I can only suspend my dimension of disbelief to a certain extent. Meaning, I tend to look for five fine-points in porn that I can identify with:
1. Is there annoying music in the background? I hate that.
2. Is the man whom is topping my “type?”
3. Are they vocal? I love vocal!
4. Are they interracial?
5. (Which is the reason I’m writing) Is the bottom black?
It’s point #5 that is so elusive. Have you ever tried to find black men bottoming in interracial porn? Oh, it’s there but you are going to have put a lot of time on Google.
The porn issue (for me) comes down to what I look like vs. what I enjoy sexually. It’s easy to find music-less interracial porn with vocal “actors” performing sexual acts. What is hard to find is a bottoming black actor in interracial porn videos. I love bottoming, it’s the “bees knees.” Naturally, I would like to see what I prefer reflected in the porn I watch: A black man being topped by a man of a different race.
So why is this so hard to find?
I have a couple ideas/theories. First, is the sexual stereotyping of black men. “Athletic, strong, aggressive, and well-hung with an unrelenting sexual appetite.” These are a few common words that we would use to describe a masculine man. These are also a few words that are commonly used to stereotype the black man. What happens when the same words you use to describe a masculine man are the same words society uses to describe black men? You get an accidently Hetero-normative paradigm. To break it down simply: Black men are masculine + masculine men are tops = Black men are tops (this is the first time I’ve used math since high school). And thus, black men are used as the “toppers” in interracial porn.
Another thought may have to do with the gay standard of beauty. Let’s be real, we (my gay brothers) love “beauty”. Media representations of beauty (especially in the gay community) have been extremely “anglicized.” I say “anglicized” because there are obviously many people of color who are considered mainstream attractive (like the main character from “Noah’s Arc,” Darryl Stephens).
However, these “beauty exceptions” tend to have treated hair (so that it’s not kinky or nappy) and features that (generally speaking) belong to Caucasians (thinner noses, lighter hair, lighter eyes). The art of beauty usually coincides with being feminine. To be feminine is to be “soft,” elegant, and clean cut. Which brings me back to math: Black men are masculine (not feminine) + Masculine men are tops = Black men are tops.
Now, when I say I want to see more black bottoms, I don’t mean I want to see more offensively ridiculous videos from studios like Harlem Hookups and Thug Hunters. I must state the obvious: not all black men are thugs, not all black men are from “urban” areas. Thug Hunters, in particular, perpetuates a stereotype of black men as being low-income opportunists. Can someone explain what the hell is sexy about that?!
A very good friend of mine had an interesting conversation regarding this topic. He happens to be a white man who has no racial preference. He told me something that caused me to pause. He said, “Do you think it has to do with how bottoming is seen as submissive and echoing the taboo of slavery? I’ve chatted with some black bottoms online before that wanted to get into race role-play. For example, me as a white master top and them as the black slave. It always shocked me… I don’t mind dom/sub but for me, it’s about power, not race.”
Wow… “power?” Power as in the ability or right to control. Could the lack of black bottoms in porn have to do with the fact that our community is structured by the patriarchy of white gay men who unconsciously do not wish to perpetuate an image that conditions the image of slavery?
Does the modern-day discrimination have more to do with what we perceive as power? For example, you RARELY ever see a big beefy muscular man being topped by a smaller twink. It brings us right back to the Hetero-normative paradigm (Men are bigger, women are smaller). “Athletic, strong, aggressive, and well-hung with an unrelenting sexual appetite” isn’t just how simply we describe masculinity or a black man; it’s what we use to describe someone who “tops.” A top is dominant. A top is masculine. A top is powerful. I can’t help but refer to a statistic in which if a heterosexual interracial couple is made up of one black person and one white person; the likelihood of the couple being a black man and a white woman is much higher than the possibility of the couple being a white man and a black woman. To break it down simply (and somewhat offensively): Black Man, dominate + White Woman, submissive = Back Man, top + White Man, bottom.
As a POWER bottom, I must say; I am many things but submissive is not one of them.
It shouldn’t be hard to create a “story” that’s not about race and perpetuating stereotypes. How about a traditional scenario in which two uniformed military guys give into the temptation and the bottom happens to be an attractive black man? Or well dressed sexy black businessman hails a cab; one thing leads to another with the equally attractive cab driver; they pull into an empty parking garage and take things further. Or a young handsome black tourist is lost in a different country; he asks a local stud for directions and of course they end up hooking up. Or two fraternity brothers? Or two members of the same sports team?
Basically, just take one of your scripts that you originally wrote for two white guys (even though the scenario has nothing to do with their European heritage) and when it’s time to cast, hire a good looking black bottom! Easy, right?
The unequal amount of screen for black bottoms vs. black tops in interracial porn has become exhaustingly repetitive. The pressure for a black man to perform as the insatiable “mandingo” top is a tired and unimaginative stereotype that does not reflect real life. I get that it’s porn, and a “fantasy” and that you can’t make everyone happy, but the depiction of more black bottoms would satisfy the desire of a largely ignored subsection in our community.
Personally, I’m puzzled by lack of black bottoms in interracial porn. My experiences are not reflected in the majority of interracial porn and I think that’s a shame. You guys are missing out on the potential to expand your audience.
I feel invisible. Under represented. And it’s killing my erection!
